Spooky Films 2018 Edition

So every October I like to prepare for the 31st by creating a list of spooky/ scary movies to watch. This year I thought I would share the list of films I watched this year in preparation for Halloween as well as my ratings of said films.

Nosferatu (1922)

Summary: Vampire Count Orlok expresses interest in a new residence and real estate agent Hutter's wife.

Rating: 6/10

The Nun (2018)

Summary: A priest with a haunted past and a novice on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun.

Rating: 7/10

The Shining (1980)

Summary: A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future.

Rating: 9/10

The Crucible (1996)

Summary: A Salem resident attempts to frame her ex-lover's wife for being a witch in the middle of the 1692 witchcraft trials.

Rating: 6/10

Annabelle: Creation (2017)

Summary: 12 years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, where they soon become the target of the dollmaker's possessed creation, Annabelle.

Rating: 8/10

Gerald's Game (2017)

Summary: While trying to spice up their marriage in their remote lake house, Jessie must fight to survive when her husband dies unexpectedly, leaving her handcuffed to their bed frame.

Rating: 7/10

The Awakening (2011)

Summary: In 1921, England is overwhelmed by the loss and grief of World War I. Hoax exposer Florence Cathcart visits a boarding school to explain sightings of a child ghost. Everything she believes unravels as the 'missing' begin to show themselves.

Rating: 6/10

The Lost Boys (1987)

Summary: After moving to a new town, two brothers discover that the area is a haven for vampires.

Rating: 8/10

Poltergeist (1982)

Summary: A family's home is haunted by a host of ghosts.

Rating: 7/10

Alien (1979)

Summary: After a space merchant vessel perceives an unknown transmission as a distress call, its landing on the source moon finds one of the crew attacked by a mysterious life form, and they soon realise that its life cycle has merely begun.

Rating: 7/10

Aliens (1986)

Summary: Ellen Ripley is rescued by a deep salvage team after being in hypersleep for 57 years. The moon that the Nostromo visited has been colonised, but contact is lost. This time, colonial marines have impressive firepower, but will that be enough?

M (1931)

Summary: When the police in a German city are unable to catch a child-murderer, other criminals join in the manhunt.

Rating: 7/10

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Summary: There is panic throughout the nation as the dead suddenly come back to life. The film follows a group of characters who barricade themselves in an old farmhouse in an attempt to remain safe from these bloodthirsty, flesh-eating monsters.

Rating: 6/10

Rosemary's Baby (1968)

Summary: A young couple moves in to an apartment only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbours and occurrences. When the wife becomes mysteriously pregnant, paranoia over the safety of her unborn child begins to control her life.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Summary: A newly engaged couple have a breakdown in an isolated area and must pay a call to the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter.

Rating: 8/10

The Haunted Mansion (2003)

Summary: A realtor and his wife and children are summoned to a mansion, which they soon discover is haunted, and while they attempt to escape, he learns an important lesson about the family he has neglected.

Rating: 7/10

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Summary: Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion.

Rating: 8/10

Ghostbusters (1984)

Summary: Three former parapsychology professors set up shop as a unique ghost removal service.

Rating: 6/10

Coraline (2009)

Summary: An adventurous 11-year-old girl finds another world that is a strangely idealised version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets.

Rating: 7/10

The Exorcist (1973)

Summary: When a teenage girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two priests to save her daughter.

Rating: 5/10

The Sixth Sense (1999)

Summary: A boy who communicates with spirits seeks the help of a disheartened child psychologist.

Rating: 8/10

Hocus Pocus (1993)

Summary:A curious youngster moves to Salem, where he struggles to fit in before awakening a trio of diabolical witches that were executed in the 17th century.

Rating: 9/10
